#NYFW - February 9th Review

Hi everyone! I've finally updated? WEIRD! I figure this would be good practice for me, and it keeps me on top of NYFW as it happens.

Here is my list of the three shows that I feel you NEED to see from yesterday!:

BCBG Max Azria:

I remember a time when I listed Max Azria as one of the worst shows at a NYFW, but this time, I LOVED what he was doing with BCBG. I'm a sucker for color blocking, especially when it is done well. He had a gorgeous palate, very reminiscent of fall; earthy. I also liked his use of sheer fabric with interesting pleats and striping. There were a lot of frocks, which are a little unflattering if you're not super skinny (I like structure), but I appreciate the ease and flow of these garments. He did mix in some furs and leather (big trends so far). Overall, I think he was my favorite of the day!

Creatures of the Wind:

Now, I don't think everyone should wear these garments, but I don't think that's what a fashion show is about! It's about setting a mode, trends, and making a statement. That's why I appreciate Creature of the Wind's show! To me, their show was a great display of mixing. Don't be afraid to mix anything! They had an interesting use of materials together; slick leathers with cozy knits and shiny satins with matte wools. And it didn't look bad! I also love a good mix of prints, and I thought they had an intriguing mix of geometrics; stripes with checkers, triangles with squares. Just check it out! It definitely has inspiring qualities!

Nicholas K:

Nicholas K has quite an interesting show. There was a lot of fur and leather, as well as fringe everywhere! I got a definite dark cowboy vibe - going from a dark muted palate, to a more earthy tone. I loved the hats! I love the interesting closures and the way he made the leather work for him in some of the more structured looks. I loved the womenswear, but I appreciated the menswear a bit less. I felt everything was so bulky and long. Everything looked warm, though? F/W! Regardless, this show is worth a look and get in touch with the earth again!

Kelly Wearstler – Cool mixes, nice textiles, commercial, denim leather knits fur, coats pants dresses skirts, color.

I loved the midterm! I've never used watercolors before, so it was nice to try them.. And I took from Downton's aesthetic of light, grayed figures with popping clothes. Very pleased with it!

This is a good post, if only for me to look back at my progress.. Keep on designing!

Sketch Studying

I've become a complete nerd. My classes start next week, so I was looking through my textbooks and just reading up on fashion sketching and such. I don't like to be the mess of the group, so I figured I would try to study up a bit, and do a few real sketches..

A friend of the family recently contacted me a

bout creating something for her for a wedding next September.. She's looking for something unique, fun, flowy, possibly pants, long, etc.. So I used that as a great place for sketching practice.. And came up with a few designs for her to look at :

Stripe Shirt

I worked on this little shirt for a bit.. Kind of wish I had more time.. It's definitely not perfect.. But I did learn how to work with stretchy fabrics a bit more. I had a few issues initially, but I think I worked them out, and am happy with the outcome.

P.S. - I did not tell her to wear gray cheetah leggings with it! HA! Work.

This was a good little shirt to work on, and it had to be pretty precise to match up all of the seems and create a good looking final product. I achieved that.. So I'm happy!

More Guggenheim and Stripe Shirt Preview

So, I took a few more pictures of the dress I made for class; a few different angles..

And here is a sketch of the little dress/shirt I'm making for my friend Michelle. I hope it comes out just like that, I love it! So far, it's working out nicely. My only issues are matching up the stripes on all of the seams, but I'll take my time and get it right! Should be done early next week when I get back home!

Guggenheim Dress

Whenever I actually find some time, I should probably just be relaxing.. But I can't! I feel so neglectful of this blog, but it's really no

t my fault! Sooo.. Since I have a few weeks off of school, I'm going to update it at least until September!

During my summer course, I was given a project to take architecture as an inspiration, and design anything we wanted. She said I could use fabrics, so I was super excited to finally be creating an article of clothing for class!

I looked at a few fun buildings as a muse.. But ultimately I went with this:

The super cool looking Guggenheim New York!

Sooo.. I came up this fun design that spoke to all of the elements that appealed to me : black/white.. the roundness.. tiers..

And came up with this:

I used a very light gold on the top, because I thought it needed some color, but also still relate to the bottom.. I sprayed those layers with starch 3 times, so it would stay standing. And I created the pattern on the bottom using different fabrics.

I'll post more pictures of it later.. Just wanted to update this blog! I had a lot of fun with that project and got an A.. So that's good? Hahaa.

Working on something for a friend to wear next Friday.. Update soon!

Zigzag Sweater

As you may remember, last year, I dabbled my hand in the first top I made for myself. I made it so I had something to wear to Parade Day that was unique and fun!

I continued that tradition by making a little number for the parade this year.

I wanted to create the entire outfit (pants included), but it was a little over ambitious in the time I had, so I just went for the top.

I created this with similar ideas of what I made last year in mind. The execution wasn't ideal the last time around, but I still liked the design aspects.

The original design for this garment included a circle-weaving button idea, but I've done that before.. so I drew on my interest in structure and straight geometry and went more zigzag. I had to add a collar, because I knew I'd be cold throughout the day.. and because I love them.

Anyway, I'm happy with it! There was a little issue with the collar being to high up and it not folding right, but I made it work.

This is by far, the most well-made thing I've crafted, and I'm pretty proud of it! It's a great fit.

Unfortunately, I don't have any pictures from the day, and none of my friends have posted them on facebook, so I just took this one now! (Apologies for looking a mess!)

I'm designing something new now.. And since I'm on spring break, I intend to finish it soon! (Yes, I'm getting more and more into menswear.)

Designs 2011

Well, after an EXTENDED break.. I'm back!

Though this blog was originally started for a project that only extended a year.. I still want to continue it, and show people the designs that I'm working on.

So, just so everyone knows.. I will be updating this periodically throughout the year and showing some of the work/things I'm doing!

It has been such a great joy to be in school. I'm learning so much everyday. I'd like to put up my projects that I've done too! That will probably have to be the end of the year, since most of what I've done, I don't currently have in possession.

Project #34 : Low V Hoodie Jacket

Well, hello all! I'm trying to get a lot done in a very short time. I doubt I'll make it to 52, but I can at least try as hard as possible! The semester is finished, and I have free time, so I'll definitely be using every bit of it to finish my mission.

Here's a jacket I'm currently working on. Should be done this weekend, and I'll be working on a dress simultaneously.

Just wanted to post up the design, but now I've got to go to work. Expect a lengthy post about what's been going on in my life soon!

I don't have time for life right now, so much to do! I'm just going to post this picture so you can get a peak of the dress. I made changes from the original design for problem solving, and there it is. The braiding goes along the top and sleeve holes. I'll give you more details when I have time!

My sister is getting married tomorrow and I have so much to do! Oh, and expect to see pictures of people in my clothes next time I update (probably Monday!)

UPDATE : Okay, so let's talk about this dress. The pattern is very busy, but I still liked it.. I thought I could work with it. I changed the original braiding design, because it didn't look good when I placed it, so I just have the braiding going around the neck and along the hem of the sleeve. I thought it looked prettier. The fabric for the braiding is inside out, because I wanted it to have a little more lightness, and be noticeable, and not just blend into the already busy dress.

I think adding a nice thin yellow belt to this could break it up and be pretty!

Working on my next design.. Probably another jacket since my last one didn't fit, and I still want one!

Project #33 : Braided Top Turtleneck Dress

This design came to me when I was falling asleep. I'm still a bit unsure of the final details, but I've sketched the initial design.

I really wanted to work with stretchy fun prints again, since I fell in love with my older designs all over. I also wanted to add some more 3D-ness to my designs. I have an idea of where I want to go with my future projects, and I think constantly evolving and trying new things is the main point of this whole thing.

So, as I continue trying to work with more structured and dimensional designs, I'm hoping I have enough time to finish it quickly, but have it well made! That's another aspect of importance.. Good quality clothes!

Will have this done ASAP!

Project #32 Completed!

So maybe deadlines aren't my thing? But, I finally finished this coat yesterday and have a bit of time to post it up today :

I think it came out alright, but the big thing is the fact that it doesn't fit! I'm so mad about it! It was actually one of the more expensive things I've made, and I can't even wear it.. Lame! Hahha.

I think it's interesting.. And I do like the buttons and zipper mixture. I think it definitely has a military feel, as well.

Who knew jacket zippers were so expensive? Haha. It was a surprise to me when I checked out! So, since it doesn't fit, I'm definitely ripping this one apart at some point and stealing that zipper! I want a trench coat! There may be a way to salvage it too. If I have enough fabric, I could cut the side seams and just install more fabric, and create a side seam block, which could be kind of cool. Something to think about? You live (or sew) and you learn!

A LOOK INTO THE FUTURE:

I met with my sister for a fitting yesterday, and yes, she is going to wear Project #31! Also, expect a little treat tomorrow.

Project #32 : Zipped Button Trench Coat

It has been (what seems like) forever since I've updated this thing! I'm just starting to get into the swing of things and juggling school (+lots of homework), work, and this project! So, it may have put me a little bit more behind.. But I'm determined to make it work!

Anyway.. The inspiration for this coat comes from a trip to the Philadelphia Museum. The museum is very nice.. I was actually pretty surprised by it. (Check it out if you can!) But anyway.. I was walking around a noticed this little waistcoat..

I envisioned what it must have been like when people hand crafted all of the garments worn.. And when people who opulent clothing every day..

Anyway.. I loved the shape of the little waistcoat.. It reminded me of a trench coat. So that's what I'm making. I guess it's because I really need one for fall (MENSWEAR again!) And I like the idea of trying out buttons and visible zippers as accents. And pairing more shape on a menswear garment.

I'm going to try to make this one quickly.. But we'll see how long it takes! I promise it will be done, at the latest, by Monday!

Project #31 Completed!

Well, that was quick! It came out, mostly, how I expected it to.

The general dress that I created was quite simple. I just did my normal draping and proper fitting with seams in the right places. I think the top seams always give it a nice finished look.

The thing that took a while was the little flowers. I think they definitely add something to the dress.. They may be too much, but I still think the little 3D attached flower belt adds dimension to this otherwise simple design.

A NOTE ON HAND SEWING:

How I created the flowers was to first cut out 15x15cm blocks of fabric with pinking shears (I like the raw edge it creates). Then, I sort of twisted the middle to create a sort of rose inner-shape. I then folded the fabric in four places along the edge of the flower.. created sort of petals. It's hard to explain, but that's the general gist.

But, I really enjoyed hand sewing, actually. I don't do it enough. It's very relaxing!

You can create anything out of fabric, with the right ideas, and a little time to think it through. Those these probably aren't the best looking "flowers," I've seen, I think they still get the job done. Don't let the machine do all of the work.. Think things through, and you can hand sew anything onto a garment to create something more out of it!

I only put the flowers along the front, and one in the back because I thought having the whole entire dress surrounded with flowers would be too bulky and less appealing. I may even take a couple more off.. We'll see!

Anyway, my sister enjoys it from the pictures, so we'll definitely be having a fitting, and we'll take it from there if she'll actually wear it.

Project #31 : Little Yellow Dress

Let me give you a little history of this dress. When applying to my fashion school, I needed a picture portfolio of 12 different sketches and/or photos of completed garments. I did panic a bit at that point, knowing that I was VERY much in the beginning stages of chasing my dream and not at all prepared.

This is one of the sketches that I did include, and always one that I enjoyed. Ultimately, the bottom of the garment is supposed to be made of little flowers of fabric, but I don't have the time to do all of that, so I'm downsizing a bit and creating little flowers as a sort of belt for the dress.

It's quite timely that I'm coming back to this garment now, because, about a year ago was when I realized that I wanted to change my life and go for fashion design.

I can't believe it has already been a year. It makes me proud of how far I've come, as well as nervous that my education is about to begin (School starts Monday!)

No matter how nervous I may be, I know this was the right choice. The thought of all of this makes me extremely happy and grateful.. And my excitement grows with every well created, designed, and finished garment. Anyway, just rambling due to reminiscing!

I am trying to create something well made and beautiful with this dress, considering my sister may wear it at her wedding rehearsal dinner (her wedding theme is sunflowers, as well as was my inspiration for this dress.. Fitting!)

I've hand sewn some of my garments before, but this is the first time I'm creating hand sewn pieces (flowers) and attaching them to the dress. I've started making a few.. They may take a while, but I'd like this finished by tomorrow!

Project #30 Completed!

I guess this post is pretty cool for me because it's the first garment I have photographed, straight off the bat, that was created for me.

Overall, I'm happy with the construction.. I think it came out really well. I definitely plan on wearing this when the cold starts drifting in!

Here it is :

Considering how hot of a summer it has been in Philadelphia, it's really ironic that I was trying this on on the coldest day in a long time! But, I can tell that this thing will definitely keep me warm.

I kind of eyed out the three notches, so they are not perfect, but I think they're sufficient! I also didn't match up the fabric perfectly for each pattern piece, but I didn't feel it was necessary. Somehow, they lined up pretty nicely, and I think it came out just fine.

I love the buttons. The use of smaller and bigger buttons added to the overall look to me.. And I definitely think the buttoned up turtleneck is great. It can be buttoned or not, and still the jacket looks cool.

A NOTE ON SEAMS:

Creating a garment the way you want it to fit is a struggle. Depending on how I want it to lie, I just try to find any constructive way to do that. This garment is a perfect example. The top of the jacket wasn't fitting properly, and I needed to create seams somewhere to make it work. So, I decided to create seams going diagonally from the side of the chest, to the neck and I really like the look of it. By adding a seam anywhere, you're adding to the overall look. I find these seams give it a more tailored finish, as well as a tougher look to make it a bit more masculine.

Since I'm going back to projects from the past, I think my next project will be one I've been wanting to create for a very long time and finally feel I may have the means to do it. We'll see!

Project #30 : Three Notch Jacket

As I said in my last post, I'm going back to menswear with this one! Mostly because, I want to wear this jacket.

I've created something like this design before.. It was actually my first project ever, and the only one I tried last year before kicking it into overdrive and beginning this blog. It was made for my sister, however, the measurements were all off, it was an awful fit, and the sewing was a bit of a mess.. So I'm going back to it.. And making it for me! I loved the design.. And would definitely want to own a jacket like this.

I get a sailor vibe from the design, and the high neck is a bit military. I think it's interesting, and I always think jackets/coats are THE essential pieces, especially for the upcoming seasons. Also, everyone should know, I LOVE plaid and a flannel.. And that's what this jacket will be made out of.

Well, I want to get sewing straight away this morning.. So, enjoy your days!

Projects #28 & #29 Completed!

*Before I start, I am completely unsure on how I feel about these two garments!*

A NOTE ON ORGANIZATION:

I wanted to first write about organization of projects. I was wondering if other people are quite organized when starting a project, or just cut and sew as they go. I'm assuming, most people figure out their pattern pieces, cut them out accordingly, then start sewing. Before this project, I used to just cut pieces as I went - cut a few pieces, sew them together, cut some more, sew, etc, you get the idea.

From that picture, you can see, I actually organized my fabric, figured out all of the pieces I needed, made sure they measured out, and arranged them with assigned numbers. Normally, I like just going at it, but I found this method much more practical, and allowed me to sew constantly, without interruption. So, though I'm a bit of a mess.. I think I'll try this more practical approach more often!

Now to the projects!

Project #28 : Mini Poncho Dress

Now.. this was completely unintentional, but I think these designs are a mixture of Little Red Riding Hood meets a Pilgrim costume? I totally didn't think about this while I was designing.. But once I saw the final products, I was a little weary about them.

I don't know if I think they're interesting and kind of cool, or just a bit of a mess.

Either way, I think they are both a testament that I'm getting better at sewing. I will give them that, they are both pretty well sewn!

And autumn was the theme with these.. And they certainly remind me of the season! Haha.

A NOTE ON ZIPPERS:

So after projects and projects of only semi-well installed zippers, it finally all came together for me! I don't know how, really.. But as I was pinning things together.. I realized if I pinned them a certain way, it would only be a seam.. Like in normally produced clothes.

See, I don't like to really read up on sewing.. I think it's more fun for me to try and figure it out on my own. So, when these things happen, it's kind of a big deal for me.. One, because my clothes end up looking better, and two, because I taught myself!

I'm going to give a brief invisible zipper tutorial, on how I'm going to do it from now on.

Step one : Pin the outside of the fabric to the outside of the zipper.

Step two : If sewing the left side of the zipper, have the zipper foot locked in on the left side. (It locks in two ways.) The side of the zipper foot should be on top of the zipper, and the piece of metal on the zipper foot that faces toward you should be gliding along the size of the zipper as you sew. (Probably confusing?) Sew all the way down.

Step three : Fold in the one side, and repeat for the other side. (You can pin them both at the same time, so you can install it without interruption.)

Step four : Have an invisible zipper installed that just looks like a seam!

Project #29 : Mini Poncho Jacket

So, to be a clear, a poncho is just an extra layer of fabric designed to keep you warmer.. And I think it would definitely do that from this design. I think adding a turtleneck to this jacket would be really cool.

This mini-poncho idea almost looks like armor on this design.

You know what, after discussing all of these things, they're really starting to grow on me.. I think I'll say I officially like them!

A NOTE ON SELF CRITICISM:

I doubt it's possible to love everything you're going to make. Some things work, and some things don't. Some people may like these, some people might don't.. Or maybe they'll be in between, like me!

I think it is important to step back from the idea that you created it, and look at your work as if someone else had made it. This change of perception may lead you to gain a better understanding of criticism and by being your biggest critic, you learn from your mistakes, grow your taste level, and figure out what works for you!

To give you a taste for the next design, it's another fall item.. And I'm going back to menswear!

*I started working this week. I'm wondering how that might affect my projects. I'm going to try to not let it be a factor at all, and keep cranking them out because I know once school starts, it will be that much harder!*

I am completely torn with my latest project. Originally, I had a dress drawn up with this design.. But I realized I've created so many dresses lately, and that I'd like to branch out a bit. So I thought that a jacket might really work with the fabric I have. And then I thought, well.. the dress is still interesting, and something I've never really done before.. So it might work. Then, I really liked the idea of having an interesting jacket to pop on the streets.. And so, well, here I am!

I'm making both of them! I measured everything out, and I should have enough fabric for each design.

I'm behind anyway, so I might as well just go for a two-fer. It's like a [very] mini collection?

Let's talk about these designs!

First off, I've realized how poorly drawn most of my designs are, I mean, I'm not a great drawer, but I'm going to try a little harder to have my sketches be more real, and try to exemplify what I'm trying to create in the garment. Everything is a work-in-progress with me.

Secondly, the colors I'm using are red and brown, which are very autumn-ish to me. I know a trend for the fall is capes/ponchos (which I've always LOVED), so I tried to make a little spin off of that with an interesting dress and jacket.

I don't like giving away too much with these announcement posts, so there's just a taste of what's to come!

A NOTE ABOUT THE FUTURE:

Some people have asked me about selling some of my projects. Selling, right now, I'm just not comfortable with. I'm not exactly sure how wearable some of these looks are, and I'd die if someone paid for it and it fell apart a day later (though I'm sure it won't). Once I feel comfortable enough, I'd like to at least open an Etsy store!

Contests, however, may be in the near future! I just feel bad about that one because I'm very broke and can't afford more dressforms to accommodate more sizes. I'm stuck with an extra-small dressform that will fit sizes around 0-4. I mean, I can try it and see what happens. I'm going to make it a creative one, for sure! Look out for it, I'll make plenty of announcements.

Been getting caught up in a lot of riff-raff, so I haven't had time to really sit down and sew.. But I had the day off today and dedicated it solely to thinking about this blog post and finishing my latest garment!

So, I'm very happy with what went on in my room today, a great piece produced!

Along with showing my new garment, I'm also going to talk about prints and shirring; two poignant ideas that went into making this dress.

Let's just dive right into the garment, here it is :

I think it's very cool, colorful, fun, vibrant, and earthy.. Needless to say, I like it!

I enjoy the neckline.. It's less owl-y than I would have liked, but I think the almost-off-the-shoulder V-neck looks quite good.

Okay, so let's get more in depth with this dress.

A NOTE ON PRINTS:

To me, nothing says 'summer clothing' like a great vibrant print!

When I first designed this garment, I hadn't picked out the fabric. While shopping, I stumbled upon this print and thought it was very cool and liquidy.. And just had to try using it!

Sometimes when looking at a fabric, it may seem so wild that you can't even find a natural pattern. Not all dresses will pin point a pattern, and create a garment off of that, but I have enjoyed this lately.

It may look like a disaster, but you can find where you want to cut pieces from and construct.

Once I do, I like to cut, lay it out, and pin where I think the specific part of the print best fits on the body. In this case, I cut out two pieces of fabric that were identical, and used one for the front, and one for the back.. I think it really came out great this time.. They match up quite nicely on the body.

This cutting may waste money if you have to cut odd shapes out of the fabric, but I think it's well worth it for an interesting end product.

A NOTE ON SHIRRING:

This is a first for me! I've been really wanting to use elastic thread, and shirring, and this was the perfect dress to try it on, due to the bell draped sleeves. I really enjoy these sleeves.. they're interesting and playful.. Just don't hold them over a flame!

Shirr - 1. To gather (cloth) into decorative rows by parallel stitching

So, for shirring, the first thing you need to do is put elastic thread into the bobbin ONLY. This way, you keep a normal, thin thread on top, which is shown, and the thicker elastic thread is underneath, and hidden.

How I measured my parallel lines was.. putting the presser foot on the previous line I sewed, and followed it.. It gave about a 1/2" between each line.

Once I did my shirring, I sewed up the sleeve, connecting each side.. Keeping the bell shape at the end.. and the elastic shirring where the wrist is. This could be for a higher placement of the sleeve, as well.. It might be cool to have the bell end around your elbow too.

So yes, this project was fun, and a first for me. And I think it's very summer!

Watch out for my next project, though.. Fall is definitely coming early!

Project #27: Owl Neck Cuff Dress

Back to another project! I'm really into trying different things with sleeves, so I thought of a very flowy end would be fun.

I also wanted to try my hands at elastic thread. I've never worked with it, but definitely will have to to get the sleeve just how I want it.

As you should know, I also love an interesting neckline, so I thought I'd try this one out. I called it an owl neck, because that's what it remind me of, the head of an owl.

So anyway, I got this really fun patterned fabric. It's definitely water, animal, nature.. And I love it. We'll see what I can do with that as well.

I've always loved patterns, and now that I have a great fabric store, Gaffney Fabrics, near where I live that carries fabulous ones, there will definitely be more of a variety in my projects!

An interesting note : This was the first time I've used pinker shears, used around the neck ruffles to avoid sewing straight edges.

I've done it! I'm halfway there! I slaved away at this one yesterday because I'm terribly behind. I think I should be at around 30 at this point.. But I'm catching up!

Anyway, I'm very excited to show this one.. It came out (for the most part) just how I wanted it to!

So what do you think? I really love it. I think the contrast between the black and the 80's ruffle pattern is very fun and I also feel this could be worn during the day and at night. I mean, I wouldn't wear it to the office, but you could wear it out on the town shopping on a weekend, no?

The only part that I didn't accomplish was the puffed sleeves. The top fabric was too heavy to make that happen, so it ended up falling flat. But it's okay.. I don't think the dress is killed without them.

So, to continue, I'm adding to my blog a bit. I think it's lacking in content, so that's why I'm trying to incorporate my random sewing techniques, as well as, my designs and some stats.

Speaking of sleeves, I've been meaning to show you how I do them.. ever since my "sleevelation". Now, don't take it from me.. I don't do things the "proper" way.. I just make them up as I go. But, it works, so I do it!

Step one : Cut out an appropriate size piece to fit the hole.

Step two : Measure how big you need the connecting hole to be, and measure how big you need the open hole to be. Pin a pattern that will fit the arm.
(*Note : the connecting hole is larger than normal on this one, I tried to have it doubled and create the puff of the sleeve, but it didn't work out.)

Step three : Sew along the line you marked with pins, cut off the excess.

Step four : Have the sleeve inside out, and the shirt/dress inside out. Fold the connecting hole out, pin to the inside of the shirt hole (so that you're pinning the right-sides out together.)

Step five : Keep pinning until it is all the way around, sew that together, and get a sleeve!

Now, if you were to have someone where this often, and wash it, you would need to reinforce that seam with a stronger edge stitch, but for my purposes, I don't until I know someone will be wearing it!

Project #26: High-Waisted Ruffle Dress

I'm on a mission to update a lot this week, as I'm behind.

But do you realize what Project #26 means? I'm half way to completion!

This design is inspired by the fabric, solely. I had to have it when I walked into the fabric store, because it was very fun, very 80s/90s, and I had the perfect design for it in my head immediately! The fabric store I got this from is Gaffney Fabrics, Germantown Ave, Philadelphia. If you're in the area, they have amazing prices.. And the store is large. If you sort through it all, you can find great stuff!

Ruffles are definitely on the rise, again, so it's timely and I have high hopes for the execution :

For this, I'm going to have a turtle neck, puffed sleeves, and a high-waisted skirt attachment.

I don't want to show you the fabric yet, it'll be a surprise. That's all I'll leave you with for now, I'll try to have this finished soon!

This one is a bit hard to photograph. I will try in the morning to get better pictures, but here's what I got.

So, the fabric : Like I said before, it's see-through.. I mean, ideally, it wouldn't be, but I really liked the fabric, and wanted to try working with something a little different. It's hard to tell from the photos but.. There are felt-ish polka dots around it, as well as glitter. So it's a bit shiny/metallic and much less drab than the pictures are showing. (And yes, polka dots again.. It was bought on the same day as the green dress.. I guess I was in a mood.)

I kind of like the way it turned out.. I like how on the hips it creates a more dramatic/pronounced effect. I took pictures of the garment alone, then tried to give the effect of what something under it might look like :

Overall, this is not one of my favorite executions/use of fabrics.. but I still stand by the design.. I may try something like this again in the near future.

Also, it's hard to get the true idea from the dressform.. I swear, one day my sister will model these. As for now, I'm stuck in my little apartment in Philadelphia, sewing away!

Very excited for my next design! The fabric is fun!

Project #25 : Shaggy Hip Dress

I really like the idea of emphasizing the hip area, because no matter what.. Girls look better with curves (but let's not get too crazy!) I've done a dress in the past (Project #15) where I tried to make the hips puff out. My sister really liked the idea and it made her silhouette more voluptuous(?).

So, I wanted to try something of the same idea, but put a little spin on it, because I like to give new takes to things. I thought it might be interesting to try to have fabric just hanging around on the side area of the hips, and if put in the right spots and sewn in correctly, could be a pretty accent, interesting, but also give the feel of a more curvy silhouette.

I have great fabric, though see-through, that I think is interesting, and it also is great for draping, light, and flows. I think the see-through(ness) of it is also interesting because you can do what you want underneath.. Pair it with jeans and a white top, try a tank top dress, or if you really want, nothing.

I also may add lace on top of it, we'll see how I think it looks.

Here's what I'm going for :

I'm also very into more rounded necks right now.. and almost off the shoulder, but not. And I thought a cute crop sleeve would be appropriate.

We'll see how it turns out!

That was quick! Actually, I've been working on this for three days, on and off, but I did the bulk of the work today. I'm pretty happy with it.. I just wish that I had a thicker belt.

The main pattern that I cared about was following it down the middle. Most of it follows throughout the whole dress though, which I'm really happy with. I think it's a little loud, but also interesting.. And I do love a dress like that.

There it is! I think the fabric is really cool, and notice how the bottom actually flows! I sewed and cut the skirt part much different than I normally do.. I kept the waist tight, and sewed folds to make the skirt come out as you get lower. And I think it was effective.

I like it! I might have another dress for you tomorrow.. Another one with cool fabric!

Project #24: Pattern Cropped Flowy Dress

I think it's time to make my blog a little bit more insightful. Perhaps, so you can understand where I'm coming from with my designs and what I'm trying to do with them.

This design (my first in Philadelphia!) was really inspired by the fabric. So far, I've only been to a nearby fabric store, which I love! It has a bunch of fabrics, many types, many patterns, etc, and the prices are really reasonable. If I had more time (I didn't have quarters for the meter so I was trying to beat a cop to my car), I could have easily spent an hour just looking through and finding different patterns, ideas, and designs. I went into the store with five different designs on my phone that I drew, and I ended up leaving having fulfilled maybe a half of one.. I was more intrigued by the patterns.

I stumbled upon an interesting green polka dot one, and as I sat down looking at it, and designing, I knew I wanted to have everything line up. I wanted the patterns to be followed through in some way, as it was sewn together.

An example of what I'm talking about is from Alexander McQueen, who does this often :

I mean, mine would be nothing like this, but you get the idea.. Of how the fabric is cut in a particular way so that it is symmetrical and sewn in the right places.

So, that's what I'm trying to do with this design :

Not only that, but I'm trying to make it flowy (finally). How many past designs were supposed to be that way, and it didn't work out? So, I'm determined this time, and I know I have enough fabric!

So, I'm going to get back to work, and finish this one up. Should be posted later today!

Project #23: Corset Cardigan - Completed!

I really like the way this one came out! The design I drew was clearly translated in the creation, and that always makes me excited.

Continuing to try and use up the fabric I have stored, I stumbled upon some old fabric I had from the cardigan I made myself for St. Patrick's Day. It is sweater type material, so I got to designing, and I thought up this guy:

It reminded me of some sort of jockey jacket.. When I finished it, it reminded me more of a corset. I think it's pretty cool, and fresh. I'm surprised how well the colors work, I think they look really cool together in this design. You can do a lot of cool color combinations with this one and have it look good.

The buttons are also cool.. They're a mixture of blue and white.

Anyway, I'm happy I finally really enjoy a design of mine.. So there it is!

I know, I'm completely behind! Life has been ridiculous.. Planning a move, finding a job, gathering for an apartment, etc.. So, I've been falling deeper and deeper into a pit of behind-ness. So this week, I decided to try to make 3 different garments in 3 days to catch up! And I did it!

The first is some leggings. I have a bunch of fabric lying around and have been thinking of what to do with it. So, I decided to pair some black lace, over gold taffeta to make some sort of look. I know they aren't practical, due to the nature of the fabrics, but I think they look kind of cool.. and with the right outfit, could be very interesting.

The next is a one shoulder dress. I wanted to try something different with a dress.. that wasn't with sleeves, without sleeves.. But both! So, I came up with this little one shoulder number. I think it comes off a little dark and heavy with the fabric, but in the light can be really pretty. I added a little fringing aspect to the top, with the inside-out fabric facing out. I thought it needed something above the fabric because it's a pretty generic design.

The last is a simple spring dress. I found this fabric on sale while out shopping and wanted to try something fun with it. At first, I was thinking more bathing suit inspired shirt, but I wanted to do a bit of cropping at the shoulders and try something new. So, I did just that! It's quite bright, but I still enjoy it. I really want to see it on the body. I added fringes on this one too, and it comes off on the shoulder a bit as a little cap, which I thought was cute. I didn't have enough fabric to make it more flowy on the bottom, which was disappointing. (This design looks much better in person.. Hard to get the fabric in the right light on film.)

Also, with the last two designs, I added a side seam zipper instead of the back one, which I normally do. It's MUCH easier, and much easier to conseal, so I'm definitely sticking with that method (though invisible zippers are expensive).

That's all the time I have, I'll try to do something similar next week before I pack! I'm leaving July 10th for Philadelphia!

Pretty pumped about these pants! My first real go at it.. I showed a few people, and they weren't feeling them, but I disagree.. I love them! And I want a pair, hahaa. I made them for myself, but they don't fit.. and there's no way to make them fit, so.. I'm screwed. But, anyone smaller than me is welcome to try them on? Haha.

I did these a much different way that I have before. I actually cut out pattern pieces (which I had to reconstruct to add the leather), and then sewed them all together. I also installed three zippers, two on the bottoms of the legs, and one at the top. They're definitely more slacks/pants, than jeans, but they just look that way because of the inside-out denim. A semi-close fit to me.. But I have too big of knees or calves or something, because it was not getting over them, hahaa. And it took five hours trying to get them off. But anywayy!

I really have to get crackin' with some new fabric, considering I really don't have much. I'll see what I have around and try to come up with a new design. I didn't realize how hard making 52 items was going to be, and I'm really behind.. Hmm.. And with my move approaching.. Ahh! Hopefully I can make up time this summer!

Project #19: Low Stripe Knee Pad Jeans

I'm so excited for this! I bought everything last night, and it was pretty expensive, but I'm hoping I do a good enough job to wear these pants!

I bought some denim, and I'm using the reverse side, because it's much more fierce, and some pleather. Also, I got 3 zippers, because I need one for the top, and two for each leg at the bottom. Overall, it was around $15. But, if I make them really nice, that's not a bad deal for sweet pants that no one has.

I'm getting to work straight away this morning, so happy sewing!

I went a little crazy on these sleeves.. Haha. I tamed them down for the pictures, but they could definitely be puffed. This is definitely tranny flamenco dancer fierce. And Jesus crucifixion chic. I had to cut the bottom short because I didn't have enough fabric, so it's really just a shirt.

Yeahh.. Hahaa. I mean, I kind of like it, don't judge me. I think if they were on a body, it'd be much better. It's hard to tell, but I used my old technique of making sleeves wrong to my advantage this time, to give a line around the shoulders..

I'm really making this one short, but there it is. Not my best work, but it's done!

Can't wait for the next project.. It's a design I've been dying to do, will definitely be a challenge, and it's for me! I'll announce it tomorrow and will try to finish by Friday.

Project #18: Crop Ruffle Sleeve Cut Dress

I wanted to play around with sleeves more, so I came up with this design. I'm hoping it'll be a bit more pretty than my drawing, but I think it could work out.

I'll be using the purple floral fabric I've used during Project #7 for this one. I thought the bottom might be fun to add something to the dress instead of straight across, but I don't know how I feel about it yet, so it might change.

This design came about in class, good time! Haha. We'll just see how it turns out, I'm hoping to have it done ASAP.

It's almost been a complete month, but I'm finally back to work! Things got to crazy during May, so I just had to give it a rest for a bit, figuring I can double up during weeks in the summer.

To be honest with you, I completely forgot my design, but the work I had done before my break was just sitting there, and I started again. So, the dress is different than my original design, but that's okay, I still like it.

First off, that's the fabric I dyed. The color is really pretty, and I was really happy with it. I love greens, and this is definitely what I was invisioning in my mind.

Finally, a new dress! It's short, of course.. And it's supposed to be very tight (..as always).. so that's why it looks a little weird on the bottom, where the mannequin stops.

I decided to get rid of the choker part, because once I stumbled upon this back while I was playing with the fabric, I thought it was fab, simple, and elegant.. And since there's a lot going on with the lace and short length, I thought I'd just end it with the simple lines and baseline neck in the front. But I still love my original design.. And possibly might try re-creating it later.

Anyway, I'll keep it short and sweet, but there it is! It probably cost me like $10+, I'm not sure.

Project #17: Dyed Back Cut-Out Lace Dress

I've really been wanting to work with dyes lately, and I came up with a decent design to try it out on. It's a pretty simple dress, has all of the things I love in a dress, and it's hopefully going to be one of my favorite colors.

I love turtle neck designs, and a mixture of cold-wear with warm-wear, where a dress has long sleeves, yet is short on the legs. I also thought the back cut-out would be a pretty touch to it as well.

I've really wanted to work with lace again, just because it's pretty, so I thought it'd be the perfect fabric.

So, I bought blue and yellow dyes to hopefully concoct the perfect green.. I'm going for a nice dark turquoise.. you know, a nice warm, gem, pretty green.

I will try my best to have this done by Saturday, but since the end of the semester is rolling around, school work is at a high, and job searching has begun so I can successfully move to Philadelphia soon. But I still want to remain on track with these projects, so I will work hard!

As for future projects.. I may, again, be using my old fabrics to try to create things because I still have a ridiculous amount, and don't want to buy more fabric just to add to the clutter. We'll see.. I really want to revisit that purple floral fabric I used on the peplum jacket after seeing it on a TJ Maxx commercial.. I may do something ridiculous with it next week.

I made shorts! I'm really rushing on this post, but I wanted to get it up while I could, since I'll be in NYC all day.

I'm pretty decently happy with these, especially for a first try. They're not earth-shattering or anything, but, hey! Also, they're navy.. I photographed in dull light. The pictures really don't do them enough justice.. Also, it's hard to tell when they're not on a body, but my mannequin doesn't have a good bottom shape. I'll be seeing my sister next weekend and I'm definitely making her try them on.

First note, buttons are expensive.. I'm getting over that aspect of things. The fabric was cheap, but the total cost was $9.00. The amount of time to make these wasn't nearly as long as I'd thought it'd be. It took, probably, around 2-3 hours.

How I made them was the way I said I would originally. I put the four different pieces along the hips and butt of the mannequin, and sewed up the whole sides, and then I sewed half of the connection between the front and back pieces. Then I connected those underneath, sewed together some leg holes, added a zipper, and then worked on the buttons and back pockets! That's about it.. I'm just really curious to see how the fit is. I may add seam pockets on the side if the fit is right, but I didn't want to if it wasn't, because I'd have to take them out anyway. This was my first patch pocket, and I love them.. Very easy to get the shape, and just sew it right on.

So, I will keep you updated on these shorts.

They don't match the polka dots, haha, but it's okay.. I like them anyway. I'll post a picture of them together tomorrow when I announce my next project, just so you can get an idea of what I was going for.

Speaking of my next project, I'm soo excited! I'll give you a hint, it'll be my first time working with dyes.

Project #16: High-Waisted Button Shorts

It's time for part two of the look I was trying to create. This is a pretty big step for me.. My first pair of shorts! I'm expecting this to take a lot of time and be difficult, because I really have no idea how to go about it.. I'll probably lay the fabric on the lower part of the mannequinas if I was making a skirt and do some cutting and folding.. I don't know, I'll work it out as I go!

Nothing has really changed from the original post.. It's still based on the same idea as before.. Allows me to use my Project #15 dress in two ways.. And is a big step for me in my quest to learn all things that are sewn.

Soo.. I'm just going to say, sewing starts soon and show you the look by Saturday! Wish me luckk, I'll need it!

Wow, I'm actually on time with this one! Back to a normal schedule. So.. This dress is a bit plain and standard, but I still think it's cute. Definitely classy. Also, I think the simplicity works well with the fabric.. It's actually pretty loud when you look at it.. It was hurting my eyes by the time it was finished.

There it is! It's hard to notice the gathering details in on the sides, but there are a few folds on the boobs and gathering at the hip.. I thought it'd add something to it. Plus it's my new thing I like trying out.

The price to make it was about.. $4.50. The time it took, probably about.. 3-4 hours. I probably underestimate.. it really takes longer, but I take a lot of breaks to think about things, and I don't really know. Actually manual labor is much less.. so I think I just average the two or something, haha.

I made this the standard way. But for the bunching in the sides, I just really just followed what the fabric did when I was molding it into shape, and tried to make some rhyme and reason out of it. The hip was a little bit more complicated, but I had to do some gathering up on that. I really hope this is a decent length.. I've been so slutty lately.. But this looks good. I'm hoping to see my sister soon to check.. I can see her definitely wearing it out!

I have to do some research into tag making.. I need some so when people wear my clothes out there's some official status.. Hahaha.

Project #15: Thick Strap Puff Hip Dress

I'm excited about this one! It will be in two parts. The entire look was first designed and inspired by '40's pin up models and retro bathing suits (because I love them):

Though this picture is a more modern version.. Something like that.. I love those!

So, yeah, I came up with a complete look that I'll show next week, but it involved a polka dot top (considering I still have a ton left!) I figured, why not just make that top into a dress and have it be a dual-use item.. Since I'm into using one item and making it work into many different outfits lately.

Not the most effective drawing, but I think it's going to be really cute. I love the thicker straps and hopefully I'll be able to execute the puff on the hip like I have it pictured in my mind. Add some pearls and class, and you're good to go!

This is just a classic, cute dress.. That I'm going to pair with some nice shorts next week!

A LOOK INTO THE PAST:

Erica's gallery opening was yesterday! It went amazingly, and her work definitely stole the show.. No competition. So proud of her! Also, she looked amazing in my dress! I stayed up the night before and re-did the entire top because it was falling apart (probably due to poor original execution), and doing that really helped! The seams stuck together and fit her perfectly! Okay, I'll stop talking, if you haven't seen yet, look at her!:

So happy she wore it and hope she loved it as much as I did! Workkk.

Finally, we end up with the hottest mess of them all! So.. Like I said, originally, I was going to make this a one piece dress, but I decided it's be fun to make it two pieces, because really.. You could add various colors under the black and white polka dots and try to make it work.

Luckily for me.. I already made a hott mess taffeta dress that I could use for under it.

Get ready..

Eeek! Hahah.. Well.. It was quite easy to make the top part. I'd say it costed.. $2.50-ish to make? And took at most 2-3 hours.. Probably less.

So yes.. It basically is a boobless and crotchless dress on it's own.. Hott! I'd probably rock that out.. Just wear a bra and underwear and make it work.. Gaga would do it!

Hahaha. I tried looking around for something else I made that I might use under it and couldn't find anything. So, for now.. I'm just going to keep it in mind, and see if anything that comes up might work better with it.

So, as for the sewing, much was the usual, but for the strap, I wanted it a bit more puffy, so I took a bunch of excess fabric and bunched it together and sewed it to give it that type of look. Also, for the shaping, I had to cut that out on the mannequin and then just sewed a clean edge.

There is also no zipper here, getting it tomorrow! But the back didn't look like such a mess like the other, so I just put it in.

Yeah, so.. This didn't work out.. But a more solid, neutral color might work under it.. The polka dots are a lot to take in.. And adding the taffeta is.. loud! But.. Dual use for that dress #13.. Plain or under things?

Project #10: The fitting with Erica went great! Though, I need to make alterations because of this damn fabric and to make it as perfect as I can get.. It's not half bad! It helps that Erica works it outt. I was going to post a sneak peek preview.. But I almost want to wait until Friday, where she is going to wearing it to her gallery! Exciting! So I'll be working on that for the rest of the week.

This three weeks of experimenting has got me down.. But I'm getting back to beauty! Ignore this, good for practice, bad for you guys. I just had to post these to show you I'm working on things and my 52 items are coming along! My next project has got me soo excited! If it comes out like the design, it's going to be retro fabulous! Project #14: Dual Color Super Cut Dress

Well, going with the great theme of experimentation these past weeks, I've definitely experimented with this one!

Yeahh.. So I tried something different with this one. I decided to try something with dueling fabrics, and make it into an interesting dress.

The materials being used were:

- Dusk Taffeta Fabric (I said it'd be back again!)

- Black and White Polka Dot Cotton Fabric

I was unsure how I'd go about it in the beginning, so I'll save how I did for the next post! Originally, it was going to be a one piece dress, but it changed.

Project #13: Experimentation Dress #1

So, for lucky project #13, I decided to break tradition a bit. I had no design in mind and just wanted to play around with fabric. I used taffeta, because it was cheap, I have a ton lying around, and I wanted to use something like it for upcoming Project #14 (but that mess will have it's own post..)

Okay, so.. I really just wanted to play around with lines, folds, pleats, and shape.

*I don't have a picture of the back because I didn't add the zipper yet (need to go to the store tomorrow), and it was not looking good*

So yeah.. It's not the prettiest thing I've ever seen, but it was good practice for me. Especially because I'm going to be using folds much more in the future.. Especially for a project I have lined up soon! I like the back as well, and I'll have to post the picture of that tomorrow once I sew in the zipper.

I love the ghetto iridescence of taffeta too! And it was good that I spotted its tackiness in the window of a store! Haaa.

I think it has an interesting shape and could almost work for someone bold enough to try it! Hey, for $2.00 to make it, it's worth the practice value!

Well, that was the longest break ever. I got behind on this project, and then I ended up just doing all 3 of my next projects lumped together and I figured I'd just update all at once.

Let's start off with Project #12! Ahh, the elephant print. This really didn't come out as I wanted it too. There were a few issues, mainly that I didn't have enough fabric to do all that I wanted to do. You'll notice a lack of a real collar because of that. I had to make it ghetto-ly.. Because I didn't know what else to do with it.

I really think if I had got the fabric I intended, it could have been really nice.. But hey, I'll work with it. It's also a lot heavier than I thought it'd be.

This was more expensive than anything I've done, I think.. And considering it's not one of my favorites, that sucks. Haha. It was about $11.00 worth of materials, and I really don't remember how long it took to make.. I'd say.. Umm.. Probably between 4-5 hours.

I won't describe much of what I did, because it's pretty typical. I did, however, get to try my first pocket! I really wasn't sure how to go about it.. So I put a slit in the fabric and sewed the fabric inside out around the slit and then added a pocket shaped piece to that slit.. Or something like that. Haha. But I did learn a bit from that.. I'd do it a bit different next time.. Mainly, making a circular shape to go around the slit instead of two pieces, etc.. And it will probably come out better.

Yeah.. So I thought it'd go together with that skirt.. Not so much. I'll post the picture anyway though, so you can see.

I wouldn't recommend two shiny fabrics like these works together, especially when both being fabrics. It's too much. I mean.. It might work in the right lighting.. But.. Yeah.. I mean.. It's not the worst thing I've ever seen..

So, overall, not my favorite, more pricy than I'm used to, and meh. But I tried! I mean.. It's pretty well made?

Project #12: Printed and Pocketed Chic Button-Up Shirt

Finally getting back into a groove here.. It's Sunday, and I'm actually writing about my next project! Nice. I've been reading magazines lately (well, mostly looking at the pictures..) and I've noticed a big trend of mixing different prints on different items of clothing.. And I really like that. So, while I was obsessively looking for fabrics on my last order, I came across this elephant print that I was obsessed with. I put it in my cart and took it out of it a number of times, but in the end, I decided to just order it. The reason was mostly because the fabric was pretty expensive for me. But in the end, I thought that it would be fun to pair a nice loose elephant logo button-up with the blue floral skirt.

Now, I have a bit of a problem. When I ordered this print, I thought it was a cream color with green/gray elephants.. But when I recieved it.. It was definitely silver with black elephants.. And I'm pretty sure they screwed me. I could have returned it, but I'm just going to go with it and make it work. I doubt it'll match with the blue.. but we'll see how it goes when it's finished.

That long story aside, yes, I'm going with this elephant print and don't you stop me! It's definitely super trendy these days, so I thought I'd do a little magazine inspiration project.

The materials I'm using are:

- Elephant Print Chinese Silk/Brocade Fabric

- Buttons

Unsure on the buttons yet. I need to buy them still, so I'll probably go with small black or clean ones.. Or work blue into them to more fit the skirt. To me, subtle touches of color on a garment makes it match another piece of the same color in a certain way.. So, yeah, thinking about it now.. That's probably what I'll do.

It'll be a bit oversized, because.. Let's be honest.. It's silk and a girl could totally walk into a bedroom with an oversized button-up and be hott! Or she can pair it with a high waisted skirt.. Like I want to do!

This will give me practice on using a new fabric, silk.. As well as practice with adding a decent folded collar to an item of clothes. Oh, and let's not forget pockets! But I'm sure you'll hear allll about them when I post the finished project.

A LOOK INTO THE PAST:

So, I did another fitting with my sister.. She got to try on Project #8, or the Slimming Sweater.. She really loved that, fit great, and I think it was effective in its slimming mission. I think she'd wear that one out if the opportunity presents itself. She also got to try on Project #11, or the Flannel Dress.. Not such a great fit.. A little small on the bust, and didn't do for her what I wanted it to.. A more leggy girl, it might work on. It was also a bit short.. Eep!

She also won't allow me to take pictures because she's "fat." Not true at all, but she promises by May/June (I know.. far) I can start taking pictures because she has to get super skinny for her wedding in September. So.. Hopefully you can see these better looks on people?

Also, having a fitting with Erica tomorrow. I don't have high hopes.. It has kind of become a mess. I fear it's going to be way too small, but we'll see how that goes!

Ahh, it's wonderful what a little break can do for your sewing. So, I finished this little dress early, so I figured I'd just put it up. Umm.. I think I feel this is the best design drawing to actual construction garment that I've made, as well as my best technical construction. I finally feel like this could be sold and looks close to legit.

I would like a bit of a thicker belt, but apparently no one in this house owns a nice belt. So, I had to use my ghetto one.

I think it's really cute, and I know it may look short, but, I did that to try to elongate the girl's legs. I think it's long enough to not have to wear leggings or something underneath, but we'll see. My sister will definitely be trying this on this weekend.

The fabric is a bit flashy, but I think it could be perfect for Easter and Spring! Perfect since we're so close to the season.

There was a bit of change in the construction because of how I wanted it to fit, so I had to add 6 small buttons.. So it cost about $6.50 to make, and about 4-5 hours to make? I don't even know why I add that because I honestly don't even know. I would probably sell this for $30.

So how did I make it? Again, it is in two parts. The top was standard with two top panels cut out and a back sewed together. Then I added the sleeves. I added a wrist cuff on the end of the sleeves.. And I really didn't have much problems in attaching the sleeves, which is a good thing! That means I'm getting better! Umm.. Then I went with the bottom skirt.. I made it a large width so I could put a few pleats along the back and front. (About 9 to be exact.) I sewed that on, and made a slit down the front and added buttons so it could easily go on and off the body. Finally, I cut out some ruffles by cutting out a flow-y pattern with two layers (well, at first I had three.. but I thought it was too much), and I sewed them on with overlap. And.. I guess that's about it. Oh, and I added a button on the ruffles, so if you want to be more slutty, the v-neck can go further down.

I also decided to put up a picture without the belt, because I don't think you absolutely need one.. It can work on it's own.

Project #11: Low V-neck Short Flow Flannel Dress

Busy day! I'm trying to get back on schedule, so I thought I'd throw this up here since I'm going to start this dress next.

Yes, it's another dress.. But when I saw the fabric, I wanted to do something different with the colorful flannel, so I thought a cute long sleeved dress would be fun.

It's almost pirate like, with a spin of color and for fall/spring seasons with a small dress with long sleeves. I'm pretty excited about it because I think it could turn out really cute.

For the top, I'd like to do some ruffles with a low v-neck. And this will be the first time I'm trying something flowy.. And less skin tight.. So there you go!

I really need to come up with a list of goals I'd like to get done with this whole project.. Like what things I need to accomplish throughout the year. Such as.. Make a dress, use flow, use ruffles, make pants, etc. Yeah, that will make things much smoother!

The fabric I'm using is:

- Canyon Sunset Plaid Cotton Fabric

I'll have this done by Saturday for when I see my sister, and have her try it on! Having these seen on real people makes this soo much more exciting!

No wayy.. Did I really finally finish this dress? Yes, I did! And man, has a lot of work gone into this one. This has definitely been the most time consuming dress, but I personally think it paid off. I think it's quite faab.

Well, there she is. I guess this would be considered couture because there was definitely some hand stitching all up in it. I still have a bit of work to do, but very minor and wouldn't affect these pictures.

I also just found out that this weekend, I'll probably doing a fitting with Erica, and she may be wearing it to her gallery opening after all! I'll keep you updated.. because this might be small.. Especially in the midsection.

These pictures make it look a lot more shiny than it is.. I hope it fits only for people to see it in person.. It's much more beautiful.

I definitely took a risk with all of the swirls, but I think it came out just as I pictured it in my mind.

It's funny that this is one of my more expensive garments to make but still only about $8.50 or less. A lot of time went into this one.. Gosh, I'd say total.. Definitely between 10-12 hours. Possibly more.. And after fittings and readjusting.. Much more, haha. But hey! This is like my first real project! So excited! But, Erica, if you hate it at the fitting, don't feel obligated! Hahah. If I was to make another one, I would definitely charge a bit more for it. Possibly $60-70? It's quite time consuming.

The main fabric was kind of annoying to work with. It's very delicate, and it kept fringing on me.

So.. I did this in parts. I started with the top section, which I did much like the polka dot dress. I cut out the top frame, sewed it up, then added the back panels and front. Then I made a generic bottom skirt, sewed it to the top part, and added the zipper to fit it all together. Then I added the swirl affect down the bottom portion. I did this by stuffing extra taffeta into the black fabric, and sewing along the bottom so it still had a 3D affect. That was time consuming. Then I added the gray-ish, copper-ish, blue-ish taffeta belt which I love because it breaks up all of the black and white circles, but still matches. Finally, I added a piece of fabric along the back to try to cover the zipper.

I mean, all in all, it's probably not the most clean or perfect construction, but for my 10th project ever? I'd say it's pretty nice and I'm way into it.

Pair this with blue heels.. Come onn.. Could be pretty sweeeet!

Project #10: Twisted Abstract Dress

Jeesh, I haven't updated in a while. I was struggling to even do this entry, but it had to be done.. Because I don't want to finish my dress before even announcing it!

But these projects are getting much more exciting! Basically because they can be worn by different people and have a purpose.. haha.

I've already started it.. and.. it's having its issues.. But.. I think I'm going to make it work with a concrete design. It took me a while to really come up with what I wanted to go for, but this is it:

Materials:

- Black and White Circle Charmeuse Satin Fabric

- Dusk Taffeta

- 1 Black Zipper

First off, the main fabric is so fab, and completely reminds me of my muse for this dress: Erica Simon! This dress is meant to be a tribute to her art, and inspired by her upcoming senior gallery display.

Also, have you ever seen taffeta? It's a mess.. But I kind of love it. It's only being used to break up the crazy fabric a little bit. When I ordered that fabric, I had originally thought it was going to be a lot more gray.. But it's actually a combination of a tannish color and blue.. and changes depending on where the light hits it (what's the word for that effect?) But I feel like it works well with the dress.

It should be finished by tonight, but I'm giving myself extra time to finish if I can't because tomorrow is cancelled out since it's Scranton's big parade.

Hopefully update later or Sunday and maybe have a picture of me in my ghetto cardigan?

Well, I guess I can say I've finished my first "menswear" item.. Photographed on a petite woman's mannequin. Haha. Though I haven't slept in forever, I couldn't sleep until I finished this and put it up, because I've done well with sticking to the deadline!

I can't get a decent picture, and I feel like it looks better on a person, but this was the best I can do in my tired state. I like the design, but it's definitely not that great in the execution department.

It was difficult, and a lot of sewing went into this, AND I didn't know how to handle the swerve design. I still think I'm going to work with it a little before I debut it.

I don't really like the colors.. It's kind of teenage mutant ninja turtle.. I still wish it was beige, just because I think it would have looked a bit more classy but.. I'll rock the blue.. At least it's bright.. Bright is always good.

But yes.. I will most likely be wearing this out on the town. It fits decently, and I'll just have to make it work! I don't back down from a challenge, haha. Though, it makes me sad that one of the poorest executions will be seen.

I definitely have to better position the middle button, I think.. Hmm.

*So far, I decided to reject the elbow pads.. I thought it'd be too much blue. But I may add them later.*

I would say this cardigan cost me at most $2.00 in materials, and it probably took me.. Ehhh.. 5 hours to make? I really wasn't keeping good track.. I'd sell this at $25 (if properly executed). Less than $5/hour.. Perfect!

How did I go about this hott mess? Well first of all, it was difficult because this mannequin torso is much shorter than mine.. So I had to a little compensating. Anyway, I did the standard things for the front panels, back, and sleeves (a lot of pinning inside out, and pinning together the proper pieces, and sewing). What was left was all the blue fabric. I pinned the trimming along the front by taking two layers of fabric folded over in the front, and the extra fabric along the inside of the garment, and sewing it close to the edge. I basically did the same for bottom and sleeves, but just with larger pieces. I didn't want to add so much blue, but I had no choice because it was too short for me without the length. Then, buttons! I had an issue with my machine and the buttonhole sewing function, which sucked.. But I made it work, ghetto-ly.

So overall, a big fan of the design, not a big fan of the execution. Check it out in person if you see me next Saturday!

PS - Gloria Vanderbilt buttons again! Why did my sister have so many?? Love them!

Project #9: Swerve Puzzle Cardigan

Completely excited about this one! Not only because it is my first menswear item, but because I'm going to get to wear it! (Well, if it's sweet..) I knew I wanted to make a cardigan, but I didn't want it to be completely standard.

So I decided came up with an idea to have puzzle button-in design, and add some elbow pieces (I think..) If it comes out the way I see it in my head, I will be VERY happy to wear it!

The materials I'm going to be using are:

- 60" Leprechaun Green Rib Knit Fabric

- 21" Royal Blue Rib Knit Fabric*

- Buttons

[*Originally, I had ordered beige knit fabric for the trimming (which I still think would have worked much better for what I was looking for) but I have some extra blue fabric that I think will still work with the look]

So Leprechaun Green? Of course I'm making this for Scranton's Annual St. Patrick's Parade Day! Please.turn.out.right!

Everything but my waist fits my mannequin, so I'm going to have to try make that area a liiittle bit slouchy on her.

My fabric order came, and I'm pretty disappointed. Upon first looking at it, I'm not impressed and some things definitely don't look like I thought they might. ..But I've had that feeling before, and I just need to find the right projects to incorporate them. And it also took over a week for it to arrive.

This week was not productive at all in the beginning, but with two snow days, I was able to use the rest of my sweater fabric, and create another dress from those drawings.

[Sorry for my girl's lumps.. got some knobs on her..]

It's tamer from the previous, but I think it's classy and cute. It can be used as a shirt paired with jeans, or a short dress with some leggings.

I added the shoulder pieces last minute.. I thought they might be too much, but I think they give it something.. less boring.. And it's a signature of mine.. if not buttons, shoulder pieces! Haa.

I went with shorter sleeves primarily because I didn't have enough fabric, but I like them, and would add a tight long sleeved dark brown shirt under it.

As far as the turtleneck, this one definitely came out more like what I was looking for with the last sweater dress. It's more droopy and thick.

I think the slimming look came out okay.. You see, since the dark fabric sort of shades the hip area, you look similar, and all the focus goes to your.. assets.. Or so I'd like to think, haha.

The materials I used was:

- 2x1 Rib Knit Mushroom Fabric

- 2x1 Rib Knit Espresso Fabric

And guess what? No buttons on this! I was very close to putting some along the bottom, but I don't think it would have worked.

This dress was about $3.00 worth of materials. Luckily, with my snow day, I had enough time to make it yesterday. I spent about.. I'd say 4-5 hours on it. I think I could get away with selling it for $30.. I could live on $6/hr, right?

I made this one the standard way I make everything.. inside out pinning. How I did the outline shapes was to just pin all of the pieces of fabric together and try to get along a similar shape on each side, front and back. It's definitely not perfectly sewn patterns, but it's close. I'm think I may try to create patterns while I'm working, to use for different projects.. It may make things a lot easier since some of this is repetitive.. especially the measurements. For the turtleneck, it's similar to the sleeves.. just on a different spot. I used a lot more fabric for it, because I wanted it to be big.. I still wish it was bigger!

I'm still waiting for my fabric, it should be coming Friday.. And I may not be charged because of their late shipping.. That'd be amazing since it was a $50 value! I'll keep you posted on that.

While I was underwhelmed with most designers, the top 3 surpassed them by far! I loved so much of their designs, so classy and so fun! All of these designers listed had a really good showing.. But after them.. Not much else was for me.

Although I realize all of the pictures I put up are small dresses, haha, but I think my favorite trends that will be coming are fierce turtlenecks, ponchos, capes, and some pretty patterns.

My top 3 WORST designers were:

3. Diesel Black Gold - not a fan of denim other than jeans

2. Richard Chai - don't understand the clothes he paired together, and very plain

1. BCBGMaxAzria - completely ridiculous, basically threw fabric on the models & put them on the runway

[I do want to say, I hate the use of fur, but there are a few designers in here who do use it, but I'm just going to look strictly at the design, and realize faux fur could be substituted on a good design. *Support these designers* ]

Project #8: Slimming Sweater Dress

Ayy yii yii! Sorry, I do know I'm supposed to announce projects on Sundays but.. It's been a rough week. I got the plague, and I've had exams, and it's been hard to focus. It's one of those head colds that make it hard to think, so.. yeah, I've avoiding doing this.

First off, I'm annoyed because my fabric still hasn't been shipped, although they promise 48 hour shipping.. I've never had problems before, but I ordered on Friday.. It definitely should have been shipped. I better get it this week, so I can start on those projects. I'm really excited about them!

Anyway, I really had no clue what to do this week, so I just looked at what I have a lot of extra of, and I guess I'm going with another sweater dress. This one is slimming, or so I hope it to be. So sorry for the picture, I got lazy (again), and it's good enough:

I finally got batteries for an old digital camera. Though they still aren't the best quality, they are much better than my phone camera. So, I attached another picture of the last project.. I think it's much easier to see it.

Pray class is cancelled tomorrow so I can just complete this all then.. Tomorrow is my long day too, so it'd be amazing! Off to study for the rest of the night.

Project #7 Completed!

Once again, I fell in love with this fabric. I've never been one to appreciate floral pattern fabric, but I'm incredibly in love with this.. It's so pretty! This has been my favorite project, by far. I became obsessed with it, so I finished it earlier this week, but I decided to hold out on posting it.

I'm really annoyed with the pictures.. Definitely need to invest in a real camera, and take the pictures elsewhere. But, I do recommend clicking on them to blow up them up, and see the detail work. Yes, it may look a bit old, but it also think it has a modern taste to it. So, first I'd like to start with, what is a peplum jacket?:

In my quest of learning all types of clothing, and trying to do research, I came across this in a magazine (Lucky), and really thought they were fun and pretty. Though it was different in the past, in modern fashion, it has become a small overskirt that falls from a cinched waist.

Oh, so, I realized, I never said what materials I was going to be using:

- Lavender and Black Brocade Floral Fabric

- 2 Clear Beige Buttons

I love the buttons.. My sister gave me a bag of random buttons, and I used two I found in there.. that happen to have "Gloria Vanderbilt" written on them.. Haa. It's a GV orig, clearly.

Guess how much this jacket cost me to make? A ridiculous amount! I would say, at most: $2.00, and I'm not even sure if it was that much. Once again, it's so hard to figure out how much time I spent on it, because I go back and forth between different things. It did take me quiet a while, but I spent a lot of my days finishing it. I would say it took.. Roughly.. 5-6 hours total? Keep in mind, measuring and pinning and thinking is time consuming.. Actual machine time is probably less than an hour of that. So, we'll.. price it at.. $35 (it is a jacket), that'll give me around $6.50/hr. Haa.. So broke.

I took my own spin on it, with this floral print. First, as usual, I cut out measurements for the top part of the jacket, pinned it inside out, and sewed the seams together. Once that was finished, I went right into sleeve. How I do my sleeves is, while inside out, I lift the bit of excess fabric over the shoulder where the main body of the dress is.. And pin it to the end of the inside out sleeve.. and sew around. [That's so confusing.. I'm terrible at describing.. I'd rather be demonstrating. Ooh, maybe I'll make a video sometime! Ha. That actually might be fun, if I speed up the time.. hm!] Anyway, so when that was done, I left the top completely open and hemmed in. I then measured out the bottom. I made it oversized so I could make the overskirt ruffled in the front, to give it more shape and volume opposing the cinched waist. Then, I thought buttons on the bottom would be a nice touch.. because I obviously loove buttons! And there's a jacket! I'm in love and don't care if no one else is.

A LOOK INTO THE FUTURE:

So, thinking forward, I'm INCREDIBLY excited for the new fabric I just ordered. It took me 3 days of thinking to get exactly what I wanted, but I'm very, very pumped for what's to come.

The problem is.. I won't be getting this fabric until probably Wednesday, and I don't think that leaves me enough time to complete something for the week.. so I'm going to be digging in my (now large) collection of excess fabric, and trying to think of something for Project #8.

Project #9 is definitely just in time for the season, but I don't want to give anything away. It also is going to be something for me.. And I cannot wait! I haven't bought myself clothes in such a long time, so it's going to be great to get something new, and also wear something that I made.

And I may have to postpone my challenge for Projects #10-15, because of the lack of responses.. AHEM, FRIENDS PLEASE! But also, I have a few things in mind that I want to make that are more pressing. So.. yes.

And don't worry.. I'm going to soon tackle a pant (though, I'm definitely pushing it off for a while).. But I will get the courage eventually! I'm just scared because my mannequin won't work for pants.. and how I create things is really mannequin-oriented.. So.. But.. I'll figure it out!

Anyway, off to thinking about Project #8 and enjoying life. Ooh, and this weekend, I may see my sister, so.. I may have pictures of some of my clothes on a human?

Project #7: Slim Floral Peplum Jacket

The previous fabric I bought isn't the only discount thing I bought. I got another floral print fabric for very cheap.. And didn't know what I wanted to do with it. This jacket is going to be so gaudy and flashy.. And I hope to love it! I have high hopes. So, yeah, I'm putting up the same terrible drawing as before, because I'd like to make that jacket out of this fabric. I may add a puffy shoulder to take it over the top, but I'm not positive how well I can do that, so we'll see.

I'm pretty excited about it, but I think it's going to take a while to make this one. But now that I have a well executed sleeve in my inventory, things should go a little smoother.

Anyway, straight to work today. With a new needle in my machine, I'm ready to go!

PS - PLEASE! give me challenges for Projects 10-15?

Project #6 Completed!

First off, I love this fabric! It was easy to work with, as well as pretty/fun. (..or so I think!)

I decided to photograph this with a simple white tank top, because that was the vision I had when I saw the completed skirt.

So my goal of having a good zipper, ehhh.. well... It was better than my first one.. but there was an issue with cutting, so it's not perfect.

Anyway, I spent so little on this skirt, it's ridiculous. I ordered this fabric just because it was discount, and I thought it could be interesting. Let's just say, the zipper was more expensive than the fabric. Total spent: $2.75. Awesome!

As for time spent on this garment.. Eh, it was hard to clock. I would say.. with pinning, sewing, measuring, and all that went into it.. I'd say roughly 3-4 hours. Hmm.. Maybe I could sell this simple skirt for $20.. That's about $5/hour.. Haha. Nice!

So how did I create this? Well, I always start my measuring out pieces that will cover the front, and cover the back. I pin these pieces on the mannequin backwards.. Then pin then tightly together, and sew up the seams, creating a full general shape. I made these pieces oversized, because I was trying to make a folds in the skirt. That didn't end up exactly as I wanted it.. I suppose it needed to be even more oversized for it to be very noticeable. I then sewed the top to try to keep these folds.. and tried to iron them to help them out. For the top portion (that's darker in color), I took the opposite side of the fabric (because, remember, I didn't know which side I wanted to use.. So I used both!) ..cleaned it up, and sewed it on the top, creating a higher waist. I decided to add a zipper in the back for a good fit, so I had to sew that in.. by cutting a slit down the middle of the back and tucking the excess fabric in and trying to cover the zipper, then sewing them together. Finally, since it is a bubble skirt, I hemmed up the bottom, but it didn't create a puff as much as I wanted.. I have ideas about how I want to do that next.. so a bubble skirt will definitely be coming up again before the year is over!

And.. that's about it. A simple skirt, and Project 6 is over! I realize this is early, but hey.. nothing wrong with early! The next project I'm thinking of may be crazy.. but we'll see what I end up deciding to do!

Project Challenges!

So, I've decided I'd like to do something different for upcoming projects 10-15.

What I'd like to do is have challenges for those projects, and switch up the format for a time.

These "challenges" can be anything.. I mean, I've already done one in the past with the Mario character dress.. Just think Project Runway. The challenges cannot, however, have a ridiculous time limit.. My week limit will still be on. Haha.

It will allow me to be more creative, as well as having people more involved with my "Journey."

So, on this post, please comment with any challenge you think will be fun for me to try, and I will pick the top 5 that I like. You can write as many challenges as you want for me.. the more the merrier.

I will probably get to project 10 in about a month, so be creative, please help me out, and make them good!

Project #6: Flower Print Bubble Skirt

Now, this challenge was to have the fabric in front of me, and design something just by looking at it. The fabric is a little out of control, but I kind of love it. There is one problem though; I'm not sure which side of the fabric is the right side to use. I'm thinking any size could be used.. one is a little more drastic, and I was thinking about going with that as the main part of the skirt, and using the other side for other trimming parts. (Sorry for the horrendous drawing.. It was rough, but I didn't feel like redrawing.)

The materials I'm using for this one is:

- Navy and Periwinkle Brocade Floral Fabric

- A zipper

I'd like to create a nice invisible zipper with this one.

So, I'm trying to change up the way my blog rolls, so:

1) What I plan on doing when I show the completed designs, is to say how much was spent making it. It will be a nice way to track how much I've spent throughout the year creating. It will include everything but the thread, because.. I really don't have to buy that all that often.

I've done this for the past garments as well:

Project 1 - $14.50

Project 2 - $4.75

Project 3 - $4.00

Project 4 - $9.00

Project 5 - $7.75

Yeah.. so maybe I'm going to be spending a lot of money on these projects.. But, hey.. It's worth it. I mean, it's not too much (..besides Project 1 which pains me to see because it was so poorly executed and I feel like a bit of a waste). Maybe if I get good enough, I can sell them? I can dream!

2) I'd like to track the amount of time that goes into creating some of these things. I don't have accurate hours of the past projects, but I'd like the start that with this one, but logging my times. Knowing the amount of hours I've put in will allow me to take in all the amount of work I've put in.

[For a fun side thing, I can give price tags to items, so by knowing both the amount I've spent on fabric and the hours I've put in, it'll be fun.]

3) I'd like to actually talk about how I went about creating the design. I think it will add more of an understanding as well as a helpful element. It can show you what I go through to create things (and how I do it probably isn't the right/easiest way, but I like the idea of basically teaching myself!) And can give people ideas to tackle things themselves (if any readers become interested in trying projects themselves).

Anyway, sewing starts tomorrow!

Project #5 Completed!

This was by far the most time consuming piece I've done yet. I think it's sort of interesting. The turtle neck may have been overkill.. But I did it before I remembered that I was putting buttons on the front. Also, I wish I had made the panels on the bottom a little bit smaller to be even more figure friendly.. But hey.. I do like it though. This was another successful fit too. I think it will fit my sister well, especially because it stretched.. she may have trouble with the neck though.. I'm not sure if her head will be able to fit through the sewn hole.. But I can fix that if not.

Even if nothing else, the best thing ever happened during this dress' creation.. I have a slevelation! Or sleeve revelation.. And my brain finally clicked.. and I finally figured out how to make a nice sleeve, both fit-wise and seam-wise. So happy about it!

So, I'll be taking some advice, and.. announce projects on Sundays and have them finished on Saturdays.. Or so I hope. And if it's not finished on Saturday.. I will show the progress I made.. But still complete it.. You know, to make it more Project Runway, and to add that pressure.

I think it's going to be a challenge to do this, but I also think my schedule allows for me to sew, as long as I keep ahead of my work and work hard. ..We'll see how it goes as I get further into the semester.

Anyway, I honestly have no idea what my next project is going to be.. so that's my goal for the day. I have fabrics, but no real ideas of what I can use them for, as they are kind of couch-y. Anyway, I want to make them work.. So back to the drawing board!

Project #5: Vertical Stripe Buttoned Sweater Dress

This design steams from a section based on sweater dresses. Originally, I was trying to get knitting down and wanted to create these, but then realized that would just take way too long, and I didn't think it was really worth my time.. Isn't knitting for relaxation? Because it was definitely just more frustrating.. I mean, I got down the motions, but the time? Nah, I'm not patient enough for that.

So, I decided I would buy some type of knitted fabric and try to go from there.

Now, the design I'm going for isn't exactly like the picture.. I'm discarding the middle design with the ladder-like fabric because I don't think I have the right tools for that.. Though I severely love it.

Biggest goal here is once again to try mastering sleeves. I'm really going to concentrate hard on it to get that perfect fit. Also, I think working with a knit fabric will be interesting.

Now to materials:

- 2x1 Rib Knit Off White Fabric

- 2x1 Rib Knit Mushroom Fabric

- 2x1 Rib Knit Espresso Fabric

- Three 7/8" Genuine Wood Buttons (LOVE THEM!)

I'm think it's going to be a similar process as the previous one with top and bottom pieces and sewing them together.. But hopefully it's a little bit more clean.

Might start tonight, definitely will have some done tomorrow!

This is when it all gets tricky with completing project.. School is back in session Monday. (My last semester, YES!) But I hope to work hard and manage it all!

Well, I've completed my ridiculous challenge. But I'm really happy with this. This is the first thing I made that I'm actually pretty proud of. The sewing on it is pretty good, and it actually looks like something that could be sold (minus the zipper that became hard to hide.. but I think that picture makes it worse than it is..). Not to mention, it's actually going to fit my sister.. (Though, she might have to lose an inch in the ass, haha).

I love that the sewing lines actually match. I also love the fact that it has some color.. everything I've created thus far was white or black or in between.

I mean, it's nothing too elaborate, but I have to master basic sewing before I can get anywhere else. Lately, I've been worrying about my choice to really pursue something like this, but then I think that I've already learned so much in a month, and I feel like I can actually do this now if I just keep working hard at it.

Don't have much time, but here it is! I'll be announcing my next project probably later on today, because I'd like to start it ASAP.

Project 4: Pleated High-Waist Polka Dot Dress

What are these names? Well, it's time for my 4th project! I really think I'm going to have fun with this. This design is an earlier one of mine and is based on a challenge one of my friends gave me a while back. It was to make a design based on two Mario characters. I thought it was fun, and I thought this design could work, so I'm going with it, and actually creating it. I'll be making the dress portion. This is obviously based on the character, Toad.

I think this will definitely be the most technical thing I've tried to pull off, but I'm excited about it. I'm going to try to craft it really nicely too, so.. It might take me a little longer.

Anyway, a continuation of the last entry, my sister came by yesterday. The small jacket (Project #2), fit well.. Except for the side panels.. Which is pretty much the most important part. She loved it, so I might try to extend the front to fit a little better. She also loved the lace shirt, but, once again, it was too small. I swear, one day I'll get it.

I really think with this dress, I can make it fit.. And I'm definitely adding a zipper in the back to make sure of it, as well as putting the mannequin's measurements up a little bit since I make everything too small.

So, the materials I'll be using are:
- Large Red Polka Dot White Cotton Fabric
- Navy Bellagio Linen/Rayon Fabric
- A Zipper (Not sure of the length yet.. Still need to do measurements and pick it up)

So, I'll be getting to work now. I know it's an interesting choice, but it should be fun.

Project #3 Completed!

So I finished the third design! Well, actually, it's been done for a while, but I've been waiting for the stupid buttons to come in the mail. I think it's okay. One success is that I think that it actually might fit someone. My sister will be visiting today, so I'll try to see if anything is going to fit her while she's here.

I think this is definitely my best, technical-ly speaking. It wasn't as difficult as the others, but I can definitely tell I'm getting better with making things. But, I've got to run. Here it is! Later, I'll post it with the 2nd garment and announce my next project!

Project #3: Puff Lace Button Shirt

On to the next! I'm going to try to create the shirt in the drawn picture. I think my main goal with this one is to finally create a closed garment. I'm pretty excited to make this, because I think it will pair really well with the little jacket I made in project #2.

The plan for it's creation is a lace fabric sewn over a white fabric.

The fabrics and notions I'm using are:
- 6 (or so..) Peoria White Fashion Buttons
- Black Raschel Lace
- White Rayon Fabric (I think? I bought this a while ago, and don't remember.. Nice.)

I'm hoping to have this done soon, because I'd like to really start pumping out the projects before school starts back up.

In other news, I ordered some more fabrics! I definitely have two new projects in mind, and bought all of the supplies for them. I also bought a lot of fabrics that I just found to be neat. I've yet to buy a fabric and stare at it, and just let something come out of it, so I thought that might be a fun goal to accomplish. Plus, they were really cheap.

I'd like to point out I got 8 different fabrics (11 yards total) and 10 buttons, which will probably be enough for 5 different outfits, all for $31 with a coupon and free shipping! I definitely recommend Fabric.com. Though, I hope they aren't too ugly when they come.. the prices are good, but I was a little iffy on the fabrics once they arrived.

So now that I have my new project to complete and a large order on it's way, I should be set for a while.. So back to my sewing machine for now!

Project #2 Completed!

So, maybe I'm not the best at setting deadlines, but I got really busy. This little jacket didn't take very long at all, which was nice. There are a few issues with the size... One side might be a little too small, but, I'm trying! It also didn't come out exactly as I hoped, but it's kind of cool, I guess. It's kind of light.. but I must say, working with stretchy fabrics is so much better fitting wise! So much easier to get that right fit.

I'm aware that it hardly matches this dress, but I was just trying to show it against something.

I'm pretty sure it could fit my sister (or so I hope), so when I see her, I'll have her try it on and see how it goes.

I've got another project lined up, and then I'm all out of fabrics, so it's definitely time for me to order some more and look through my book or design more things. That's the plan this week. New fabric, new designs, more practice!

The next project will be announced soon! Oh, and if you notice, I'm pretty much on schedule for 52 items.. This is the second full week of the year, and I've created two things.. so I'm going to make myself finish projects by every Sunday. Thinking about it makes me scared though, that seems kind of hard. But I must! Just got to keep thinking about all of those people who have so much practice and going up against them with my zero experience.

Down time at work will definitely need to be creative!

Project #2 Update

Well, this project is taking much less time than I thought it might, which makes me happy. However, my machine today is out of control. I'm assuming it is because I've still yet to change the needle.. and have done a lot of things with that needle. The book I've read says that you should change the needle with every project. I think maybe every other project will work for me.. But, man, is it annoying when it keeps skipping stitches and I have to keep redo-ing everything. Also, I've stopped for today because I'm about to run out of black thread and I don't want to get going on a different part of the jacket and then have to stop because there's no thread left. Currently, I have all of the panels completed, what's left is to sew it all together, add the sleeves, and add the shoulder pieces.

Also, another injury occurred.. where pins were sticking out of my mannequin, and I scrapped the bottom of my finger on one. And it just kept bleeding. Pretty sweet!

Finally, I think this is going to fit! I'm not getting too excited yet, though. Somehow I'll screw it up! Expect it to be done by tomorrow or Thursday! (Or whenever I manage to get to a store..)

Project #2: Mini Shoulder Jacket

Ah, I'm getting back to the grind to start my second project! I will be trying to create the tiny black jacket that is seen in the picture I've attached. Now, I think the biggest thing I want to accomplish with this is to make it wearable and fits someone I know. I think that this could go with many different outfits. Anything that is short sleeve, you could put this over it. Since it's black, it could match a lot of different looks. However, with the shoulder extensions being white, that limits its uses slightly, but still, it's just a cute light jacket that you throw on when it's chilly.

The fabrics I'm using are:

- Black Rayon Jersey Lycra Fabric

- Ivory Boucle Suiting Wool Swatches

I'm not sure how I like the primary black fabric, but I think it might turn out okay. Being lycra, at least it may keep in the heat when wearing it in chilly weather.. Anyway, let me get to trying to pull this together.

When I'm finished and able to photograph it, I'll put it over Project #1, which will have the original tracking I forgot to complete.

Well, I can officially say, I'm down to 51 items left! My first dress is finished. It has a bunch of fitting issues, and things didn't go as planned throughout its creation, but I can't say I hate it! Looking back at my original drawn design, it replicates it pretty well, besides the decision to tear the back and put buttons down the entire thing.

Yeah, so I woke up and pretty much went at it until it was completed. First, I had to put the buttons down the back (I didn't last night like I said), then I went into trimming the button, and then the sleeves, which were a complete nightmare, as I figured. I definitely tore quite a few seams to get them somewhat decent looking. I need the most practice on getting those right, I think.

Now, keep in mind, I think it looks a LOT better in person, and these pictures I've attached give it a different feel. For one, the front (which is on the right), looks like it should be the back.. the boobs didn't really photograph well.. Maybe I'll try later to get a better picture.

If I could have changed a few things, I would have redone the sleeves, so they were a bit more flow-y, like the drawing, and that it would be a much better fit. I took down the measurements even more to the smallest settings on the mannequin: 32, 22, 31. So, if anyone fits that.. we could work something out.. hah! Maybe a prostitot..

Anyway, it was great practice, and I'm proud of it, I just wish everyone else could see it in person!

Project #1 Update #2

I've been working for a while now and let's just say.. Things haven't gone as planned. Once again, I've created something way too small. I don't understand how I can possibly do this when I use the mannequin and fit the fabric to it, but I'm really good at it.

The original measurements were: 34, 27, 35.. Umm, yeah.. I had to reduce it to the almost the lowest settings and now it fits: 31, 24, 32 (give or take).

That's definitely not the only problems. Because I couldn't get it on the mannequin, I had to cut open the entire back, and just decided to put buttons down the whole thing. So, I'm changing the materials I'm using; instead of (Three) 9/16" Jet Black Orla Buttons, I'll be using (Nine) 1/2" Black Fashion Buttons.

And I've gotten a ton of practice with the buttonhole function on my machine. It's ridiculous. I don't know how to describe the foot, but it definitely could be used as a torture device. Of course, it took a lot of getting used to and I made plenty of mistakes at first, but I think I got a handle on the function now, so if nothing else, practice is definitely something I could use a lot of!

I'll soon be retiring to my bed to sew on the nine buttons down the back. I don't have to work tomorrow, so I think I'll definitely finish.. Although, I still have a lot to accomplish. Still have to do the sleeves, trimming, and tracking. (And a few hemming issues.)

I bet you can't wait to see my newly named, Foil Mess Dress, tomorrow! (I hope.)

Project #1 Update

So, I began the dress yesterday. I made some decent progress.. Have at least a side almost done. Also, I never understood how one could stab themselves with a pin on a machine until yesterday. It hurts.

I'm not sure how I feel about the dress.. The fabric definitely looks like tin foil. Also, the sewing it not exactly going as planned, and there may be a few wrinkles here and there. Oh well, we'll see what can be done with it. It's kind of hard to get everything done while having a job (be it a fake one, but I still have to go) and all of the other chores of the day, but I'm managing. I actually love the feeling of being busy, so I guess it works.

It's also tough because I work in the tiniest little room I made for myself. I've attached an picture of where I work so you can imagine me going at it. Also, put some calm music in the background of that image. And Lady GaGa.

I've still got a lot to go with the sewing, trimmings, and buttons, but.. I hope to finish tonight or tomorrow. Will keep you posted!

Project #1: Side Track Button-Back Doll Dress

First off, I should mention that I'm mostly designing these clothes in the hopes that someone can wear it. Currently, I am using my sister's measurements and creating them virtually for her, but would like to branch out to more people if given the opportunity. The only dress form I have is a petite size, and could possibly get a size 6 at the biggest out of it, but that's about it. I don't think I'll be using patterns at all when making the garments, I'm thinking more working with my mannequin and many, many pins to do the trick.

Anyway, project #1 is going to be what I've called the "Side Track Button-Back Doll Dress." The rhyming wasn't intentional, and I didn't even realize it did until I typed it. That could use some work.. I've attached a picture of the design in which I hope to create.

The fabrics and notions I'm using are:

- Hammered Pale Gray Satin Fabric

- 2" Scalloped Black Beaded Lace Trimming

- 9/16" Jet Black Orla Buttons

The fabric is extremely shiny and not exactly what I expected, though I'm not sure what I was thinking.. It is satin. But we'll see what I can make of it. It probably would have been a nice New Year's Eve dress, but, of course.. I'm a little late.

Oh, and you see that tracking of lines on the side? I plan on during that with a sewing machine, black thread, and a steady hand. Doomed.

An Extended Introduction

Upon reading my first entry, I thought I should give a little bit more information on where I'm at in this process. As I was saying, I had to create a portfolio in order to apply to Philadelphia. Because of my experiences in biology, I decided to create a portfolio of drawn designs based on nature. With this, I was able to attach a nice letter explaining my situation and what I thought I could bring to the table at that point in my life.

I attached a small, dark image to this post to give an idea of what my portfolio consisted of. (This one based on sunflowers, though lacking in the details department due to poor phone photography.)

From then on, I've been continuing sketching designs into a little black book that I received from someone special, and began to create a book in itself of designs categorized into sections based on the type of garments being drawn up.

As for fabric, let's just say, Northeast Pennsylvania is probably not a mecca for fabrics and it's hard to find. After MANY visits to a general store, Joann Fabrics, and a venture into center city Scranton's, Sew Smart, I couldn't find a thing. So, I decided that possibly buying fabrics online may be the best idea for me at this point. (That is, until I move to Philadelphia, or able to take a trip down.) After scoring a sweet deal with Fabric.com, I decided I'd try out their services. The shipping was very, very fast (I placed an order on a Saturday, and was at my house on that Tuesday), and I figure I'll be using them for at least my first few projects.

Also, I should mention Sewvacdirect.com has also been a great source for sewing resources.

From Biology to Fashion

Welcome to my blog, my name is Anthony.

I never really had a desire to begin a blog. First off, I didn't think anyone would read it. Secondly, I would be embarrassed to confess that I actually have one. And finally, I just didn't feel like I would have anything interesting to say that would keep it going. But somehow, I've found myself at a keyboard and typing this little entry that may only be read by myself with a project in mind that I want to chronicle. And I'm fine with that.

For people that may be bored enough to read this little thing, let's start out by saying, I'm a senior college student about to receive a Bachelor's Degree in biology and psychology in May. This should be a time where I feel like I'm finally growing up, hopefully finding a solid job, and starting a real life. But this is definitely not the truth. Don't get me wrong, my studies have fascinated me and I appreciate all of what I've learned in the four years I've attended my university, but I hardly have retained a thing. With this lack of passion, I can't move forward in these fields.

I entered college as a pre-med student, poised to become a doctor. After praise from all of the elders I knew, and being the "smart" person I was, it seemed attainable. Quickly, I realized that would never be a dream that I would want to have. Doubt entered my mind early on in my 2nd year of college when I wanted to go for a more passionate, but much less practical dream. Alas, though, I continued on in my major and found a love for genetics (which I will always enjoy), and had my heart set on moving to California and entering a genetic counseling program.

This summer, however, I finally decided that I would not be attending a master's program in any science field. I, instead, would be applying to something much further than that. I would be applying to a Bachelor's in Fashion Design.

I, one who firmly believes in following your dreams in the one life you have, believed that I should go for it. Why should I be subjected to a life in a dull room, telling people that they should abort their children because they have Down's Syndrome?

So, I researched all of my options and found that I would apply to Philadelphia University, because it would be the least expensive route, and still allow me to have a full time job, and finish within four years. It also had the appeal that I didn't have to submit a portfolio, which made me extremely excited being that I've never taken a drawing class in my life.

Well, turned out, I read wrong, and a portfolio of 12 items needed to be submitted. Damn. Well, somehow, I got through that endeavor, and mid-October, I was accepted into the program for Fall 2010.

Beyond the incredible excitement I felt for actually being accepted somewhere (even if it wasn't a prestigious fashion academy), I saved up all of my money to buy the essentials.

This basically leads me to where I'm at now. I bought a Singer 7463 machine, a petite Twinfit dressform, and many other gadgets I thought were important. That was all fine and great, but there's one little problem: I have never sewed in my life. (Besides a pillow in elementary school and a tiny coat disaster I tried in December.) Now, you have to understand my fears. I'm going into the world of fashion where young people have probably been sewing their entire lives, learning from grandparents and parents, and making garments for friends since intermediate school. I'm thrusting myself from a solid degree in the sciences to an uneasy, competitive world of fashion with nothing but ideas and dreams running in my head.

This leads me to my project for the New Year. I'm going to make 52 pieces of clothing in 2010. With nothing but my Sewing for Dummies book in hand and watching shows like Project Runway, I plan on somehow getting through this. I'm hoping this blog is going to help me get through my fears and even allow me to access help from readers out there.

I'll keep this updated with stories of my ventures in all things fashion. Project starts now! I don't have time to proofread this entry, so I hope it's not disastrous. Wish me luck!
